Ijen Blue Fire Tours

1 Day 1 Night

From Bali Finish Bali

Mount Ijen is an active stratovolcano located in Banyuwangi City, East Java, Indonesia. It’s famous for its striking sulfuric lake and the mesmerizing phenomenon of blue fire, which is caused by the combustion of sulfuric gases. The volcano stands at about 2,386 meters (9,183 feet) tall and is part of the Ijen volcanic complex, which is made up of several craters and volcanic peaks.

One of the main attractions of Mount Ijen is its crater lake, which is the largest acidic lake in the world, with a pH of around 0.5 (extremely acidic). The blue fire phenomenon is a result of sulfur gas igniting as it comes into contact with the oxygen in the air, and it can be seen at night in the crater.

The area around the volcano is also known for sulfur mining, where local workers carry heavy loads of sulfur out of the crater. The conditions are harsh, and the workers face significant health risks due to the toxic gases.

The Ijen Crater and its surroundings are part of a larger protected area called the “Ijen Reserve,” a popular spot for hikers and tourists seeking to witness its natural beauty.

🔥 Mount Ijen Hiking Tips

Wear Comfortable Hiking Shoes

  1. Bring a Gas Mask or Respirator
Mount Ijen emits strong sulfur gas near the crater. A proper mask will protect your lungs and make breathing easier.

  2. Dress Warmly
Temperatures can be very cold before sunrise (around 5–10°C). Wear a warm jacket, gloves, and a hat.

  3. Use a Headlamp or Flashlight
Since the hike is at night, a headlamp will keep your hands free and help you walk safely in the dark.

  4. Stay Hydrated & Carry Snacks
Bring enough water and some light snacks for energy during the 1.5–2 hour hike.

  5. Follow Safety Rules
Do not go too close to the crater lake, as sulfur gas can be dangerous. Always follow your guide’s instructions.

  6. Pace Yourself
The trail is uphill and can be challenging. Walk slowly and take short breaks if needed.

  7. Bring a Camera
The sunrise view over the turquoise crater lake is unforgettable—don’t miss the chance to capture it.

  8. Respect Nature
Keep the environment clean. Do not litter and respect the natural beauty of Ijen.

  9. The trail is steep and rocky, so good trekking shoes with strong grip are essential.
